Terry Redlin’s Story

The Redlin Art Center is Terry Redlin’s gift to his hometown of Watertown, South Dakota. Over 160 of his original oil paintings are on display.

In 1952, at age 15, Terry Redlin lost a leg in a motorcycle accident. At that time, the State of South Dakota had a scholarship program for students with disabilities. Terry was awarded a $1500 scholarship. Without it, his family would not have had the resources to send Terry to college. He went to art school, earned a degree, and began a career as a commercial artist.

By 1984, Terry was well on his way to having a successful career as a wildlife artist. His son, Charles, convinced his father to stop selling original oil paintings so that someday a building could be built to share the paintings with others. Terry agreed on one condition – he wanted the building built in his hometown of Watertown, South Dakota to repay the gift of the scholarship.

On June 6, 1997, the Redlin family opened the Redlin Art Center. As part of the family’s on-going gift, admission to the Redlin Art Center is free and the Gallery and Gift Shops are open year round. We look forward to your visit.
