Pause for a moment and return to a simpler time and place when the aroma of burning leaves in the fall air signaled the changing of seasons. It was a more innocent era before an expanding population created environmental concerns, and when harvesting of summer's foliage was a small town ritual. Careful observers will also see in this painting other fading memories from America's romantic past: the prominent town bulletin board, the flag positioned proudly outside the general store and the familiar Maple Drive and Elm Street. The distinctive lamppost and stone sidewalk tell us this scene is just down the block from "Autumn Evening."
Many years ago I lived in Detroit, Michigan on a tree lined street in a big house with many other big houses and wonderful neighbors. In the Fall, the leaves would fall and my Grandpa would rake the leaves up to the street and set them on fire. The smell would go through the entire neighborhood and it was such a good smell. After I got married and moved away from that old house, I was in a shop called The Wooden Bird. Browsing through the store, I came across the framed print, “Aroma of Fall”. Looking at the print, I got a huge lump in my throat and my mind was flooded with memories of that big old house, my Grandpa, and the smell of the burning leaves. I could actually smell the leaves burning in my imagination. At that moment, I knew I’d have to have that framed print. It was expensive and being a wife and mother of two children, we couldn’t really afford to purchase it. I was persistent and finally purchased the print. It has been displayed in my home, over a piano to this day. Every time I look at it, I see something different in the print, a leaf, the smoke, the old house. Since that time, we have purchased more Terry Redlin prints and love them, but somehow, the Aroma of Fall will always be special to me.
